About

Meet the Artist

MD Antoine creates paintings that explore the relationship between composition and narrative.

Whether working through abstraction, portraiture, or simplified form, the work investigates how placement, colour, rhythm, balance, and negative space shape emotional experience.

Rather than beginning with a fixed message, each painting develops through observation, experimentation, and response, allowing unexpected relationships to emerge until the composition begins to reveal its own story.

Who is MD?

MD Antoine is an Ottawa-based artist and communication researcher. She holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Ottawa, where her research examined how information is communicated, understood, and acted on following an autism diagnosis.

Her academic work has explored the experiences of families, the role of peer communities, and the ways communication can shape understanding and decision-making during periods of uncertainty. Alongside this research, Antoine has continued to develop an independent painting practice concerned with how people interpret what they see and the meanings they bring to an image.

For Antoine, art and research are separate practices, but both begin with a similar curiosity: how people make sense of experience.

PHILOSOPHY

I didn't begin painting to illustrate ideas.

I began because painting offered another way of thinking.

Some works begin with memory, others with observation, curiosity, or a single visual question. Rarely do they end where they started. What interests me isn't arriving at a predetermined image, but discovering one through the process of making.

For me, the studio is a place where questions become compositions before they become answers.

PROCESS

Every painting develops through a series of decisions.

Some marks remain. Others disappear beneath new layers. Composition evolves through revision rather than certainty, with each change informing the next.

Although many works begin from personal experience, they are not intended as fixed narratives. Once complete, the paintings become open to interpretation. Meaning is created as much by the viewer as by the artist, allowing every encounter with the work to become part of its ongoing life.

Artist Mission

To create paintings that invite discovery rather than explanation.

Working through composition, abstraction, portraiture, and atmosphere, the work explores memory, perception, identity, and human experience. Rather than communicating fixed narratives, each painting creates space for viewers to construct their own.

Composition is treated not simply as design, but as a narrative device.
