The Artist

MD Antoine is an Ottawa contemporary artist who creates paintings that explore the relationship between composition and narrative.

​

Whether working through abstraction, portraiture, or simplified form, the work investigates how placement, colour, rhythm, balance, and negative space shape emotional experience.

​​

Each painting develops through observation, experimentation, and response, allowing unexpected relationships to emerge until the composition begins to reveal its own story.

A nine-piece collection built through portraiture, abstraction, and atmosphere. Quietus moves through inheritance, interior memory, and being.

The Way We Moved

A collection built through figure, gesture, and composition. The works draw from childhood scenes and everyday rituals, unfolding through distance, movement, and relational space.

Anba Po Mwen

An evolving collection of paintings rooted in images, places, and memories that have remained part of the artist's visual language across time. Begun with a work painted in 2001 and continuing through new paintings, the collection traces a return to a world that was never entirely left behind.

A body of work where abstraction meets interruption, with fracture and surface as the subject. Each work stands on its own while contributing to a larger body of work, inviting viewers to find their own meaning in the spaces between form, gesture, and perception.

Spectrum

A six-piece portrait series exploring the breadth of human emotion through bold, comic-inspired portraiture. Each work captures a distinct emotional state, transforming expressive color, posture, and facial expression into a visual language of feeling.

Each collection explores a distinct question through its own language of composition, colour, and form. Across these different bodies of work, I return to questions of memory, identity, movement, perception, and the relationship between the individual and the spaces they inhabit. Each collection opens onto a different visual world while remaining connected through these recurring concerns and an ongoing exploration of material, form, and experience.
